The Junior Band
Helston Town Band has had a Junior Band for almost 50 years. Currently there are between 25 and 30 members who range in age from 9 to 19 years. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Bandroom in Church Hill ( See
Map ).
The Junior Band has had success at contests in the past including a hat-trick of wins at the SWBBA contest. The Junior Band carries out engagements both in the town and surrounding area throughout the year, including summer fetes, the annual Christmas Concert and Helston Flora Day. All tuition and instruments are provided free of charge to enable young people of any background to enjoy making music in a happy environment and make new friends.
The Junior Band is conducted by Keith Busby, who is
a playing member of the Senior Band.
The band also has a successful Beginners Band made up of 35 members at present. There are three beginners groups, structured by ability who rehearse on a Friday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Most of the beginners are aged between 7 to 15 years although there are also adult learners - age is no barrier!
The beginners perform publicly throughout the year at the annual Band Fete, Christmas Concert and Helston Flora Day.
The Beginners Band is taught by Mark Williams, Paul
Jenkin and Kevin Johns.
